Supporting Every Child’s Reading Journey

At our school, we believe every child can learn to read in a way that works best for them. We use two exciting reading schemes – Rhino Readers and Bug Club to help children develop skills, confidence, and a love of reading.

What are Rhino Readers?

Rhino readers is phonics-based reading scheme designed to match how children learn sounds in school which is closely linked to our phonics teaching of Twinkl phonics. The books are carefully structured, so children practice the right sounds at the right time. The books include fun stories, colourful illustrations, and clear text. Perfect for children who are building early reading skills in small steps.

We use these books at our school because they have short, engaging stories to help children stay focused, with clear progression to build confidence.

What is Bug Club?

Bug Club is a book-based reading programme full of exciting stories, non-fiction texts and comics. Each book features interactive questions and quizzes to check understanding.

We use these books at our school because they have a wide range of levels from very early books (Lilac level) to more complex texts. The texts are motivating with many familiar stories from Disney Pixar.

How Rhino Readers and Bug Club Work Together

Rhino Readers help children build phonics and early decoding skills. Bug Club gives children a chance to apply skills, practice comprehension, and enjoy a wide range of texts. Together, they provide a balanced, engaging approach to reading for all learners.

How Can You Help At Home?

Read together little and often – even 5–10 minutes a day makes a big difference. Encourage your child to use their phonics to sound out tricky words. Talk about the story and ask simple questions like ‘What happened first?’ or ‘Which part did you like best?’ Celebrate effort, not just accuracy – confidence is the key.

Our School Commitment

We know every child learns differently. That’s why we match books to your child’s reading ability, pace, and confidence. We provide printed books to read at home and at school. We offer extra support for children who need it, step by step.
Together, we can help your child become a happy and confident reader.
